A settlement of Bedkot at risk due to erosion by Chaudhar river

Kanchanpur. Bedkot municipality-4 Baitoda, after Chaudhar river began cutting, the settlement itself has started to be at risk.

Along with the continuous rains since Thursday, the floods in the river have cut down about three bighas of land belonging to more than two dozen families and turned it into a bog. The land of Gyanjyoti Child Development Center of the village has also been cut down.

Dhangiri Od, who lives in the coastal area of the river, said that he washed the fields with paddy crops planted on seven acres of land. “There was little land, that land has also been washed away by the river, and the house is also at high risk”, he said. Od said that a situation has arisen where people have to go to the shelter of their relatives to avoid the flood.

Most of the economically poor families of Dalit community live in this village. Due to the lack of embankment arrangement, every year the flood has been cutting the land like this. Social worker Rajuram Saraki said that more than a dozen families’ lands have been cut during this rainy season. “We have been appealing to the municipal office many times for the construction of embankment, but we have not been heard yet”, he said. According to Saraki, the land of many families has been washed away and the remaining land has also turned into a bog. He says that if the embankment is not built soon, the entire village will have to be displaced.

Similarly, Vanhara river is cutting in Pragathi tol, which is a settlement of Badi community located in Krishnapur Municipality-2 bank. Padam Rana, Chairman of Vanhara Disaster Management Committee, said that the river has changed its course and has started cutting towards Badi Basti.

“The Bagai river has cut two hundred meters of land in the settlement. If there are no immediate measures for prevention, it seems that many problems will arise. Therefore, we request the relevant agencies to construct the embankment”, he said.

Ward Chairman Arjun Saud said that the attention of the municipality, state and federal government will be drawn for the construction of an embankment to protect the settlement. He said, “The budget of the ward does not cover the construction of embankment, there is no alternative to appeal to other agencies.” Rasas
