Kathmandu. Today’s meeting of the Constitutional Council concluded that the recommendation for the appointment of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as the future Chief Justice will be further studied and discussed to make it uncontroversial.
The members who participated in the meeting suggested that sufficient study and discussion should be done on any matter before the decision to make the decision of the council uncontroversial.
The term of office of the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Vishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, is ending on the 19th of October. The Council will recommend a name from among the senior judges for the vacant position and send it to the Parliamentary Hearing Committee in the Federal Parliament.
Deputy Speaker Indira Rana informed the RAS that the necessary decision in this regard will be taken at the council’s meeting on August 31. He said, “Though the recommendation of the most senior judge will be made to the Chief Justice, it has been agreed to study it further so that there are no errors or disputes.” Expressing his belief that such studies and discussions will be fruitful to mature the decisions made by the Council, he said that it will be the beginning of good practice and mature decisions.
Chief Justice, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives participated in the meeting chaired by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
