Mayor Gopal Hamal informed that biological embankment has been started to prevent flooding and erosion in the Khutia river which flows through Ward No. 7, 12, 15 and 17 of the sub-metropolitan city. He said that this year, the target is to plant 6,000 Chap species of bamboo, 6,600 Amriso and 6,600 Napier plants in the 30 km area of the Khutiya River.
Mayor Hamal informed that the work has been progressed with the expectation that the organic embankment will stop soil erosion and bring cleanliness to the environment and that the local community will benefit from the growth of bamboo plants. He said, “The problem of flooding and erosion will be reduced with the biological embankment, along with this, the local people can also earn income from bamboo production, which is expected to create employment.”
The embankment is going to be done in a joint partnership between the sub-metropolitan city and the GRAPE project of the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ). Ashok Awasthi, engineer of sub-metropolis, informed that Rs. 17 lakh is going to be spent for this. The sub-metropolitan said that the embankment started by planting bamboo saplings on Tuesday from Bailey Kanari Bridge of Ward No. 15 will continue for 30 kilometers.
Floods in the Khutia River have caused flooding and erosion problems in various wards of the sub-metropolitan city every year. It is expected that the problem of inundation and erosion will be reduced after the construction of biological embankment.
