Today is the 58th International Literacy Day. On this occasion, I would like to express my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all the students, teachers, parents, educators and Nepali sisters and brothers.

Along with ensuring the fundamental right to get compulsory and free education, the government’s priority is to provide quality education to all children of school age and to gather opportunities for life-useful education for the citizens who have passed the school age. For this, along with the implementation of the Compulsory and Free Education Act, 2075, literacy/lifelong learning programs are being implemented. The role of the local level is important in the implementation of literacy programs. In view of the fact that due to poverty, the literacy and enrollment campaigns in some parts of Terai and Durgham were not meaningful, the previous government under my leadership started a nationwide student enrollment campaign program. The policy of compulsory enrollment of all children of school age in school has also helped the campaign of literacy. To prevent enrolled children from dropping out of school, the government has implemented other incentive programs such as mid-day meals, scholarships, etc. The government plans to improve it further.

In recent years, fully literate municipalities and literate districts have been declared in Nepal. This is an important achievement. The world has now entered the age of information technology, so technology-friendly literacy and skills are the need of the hour. The government is moving forward in a planned manner to provide technology-friendly education. By connecting education with employment and self-employment, we all have to work together to transform illiteracy into literacy by making the role of the private sector, social organizations and others effective. With the contribution of all of us, we can make the campaign of literate Nepal worthwhile. As Nepal is progressing towards a fully literate country, a prosperous Nepal is destined to fulfill the national aspirations of happy Nepalis. Since the contribution of the education sector is important in achieving this destination, I sincerely call on all concerned to play their role accordingly.

Finally, on the occasion of the 58th International Literacy Day, which is to be celebrated with the motto “Promotion of Multilingual Education: Education for Mutual Understanding and Peace”, I would like to express my best wishes that this day inspires to move forward with peace, tolerance, multilingual education and mutual understanding.
