31 May, Kathmandu. In Nepal, it has been found that 65 percent of laborers work as daily wage earners.
The statistical report of Nepal Living Standards Survey 4th (2079/80) was released by the National Statistics Office on Thursday. The main part of the report, the poverty statistics, was released last January. On Thursday, the office released various data related to education, health and employment.
According to public data, still 64.9 percent of laborers or laborers in Nepal understand their wages in daily wages. One of the main reasons for this is that a large sector of the economy is still informal and the other is that there are many agricultural-based firms and jobs.
It is mentioned in the report that the share of laborers who do not receive monthly salary apart from daily wages is 28.7 percent. 6.4 percent understand the salary based on the contract agreement.
Nepal Living Standard Survey was conducted for the first time in 2052/53. Since then, this fourth survey has been completed.
From the standard of living survey, the data related to consumption, access to service facilities, consumption of housing and residential facilities, education, health, employment, income, savings and loans, remittance flow, land ownership and use have been published by the office under the multidimensional survey. According to the survey, the population below the poverty line in Nepal is 20.27 percent.
Unemployment rate 4.7 percent
According to this survey, the unemployment rate in Nepal is 4.7 percent. It seems that 32.4 percent of the total population is in some kind of employment. The population not in the labor force is 62.9 percent.
Although the share of daily wage workers is large among workers or laborers, the average income is not much. According to the report, daily wage workers earn an average of Rs 54,632.
It has been found that workers who work on monthly salary earn an average annual income of 390,682 rupees. According to the data, the average annual income of workers working under contract is 2 lakh 15 thousand 387 rupees.
The tendency to register firms is increasing
It has been observed that the tendency of entrepreneurs in Nepal to register and operate in some body is increasing. According to the data, it is found that 52.6 percent of the enterprises are registered and running. In the previous survey, only 20.3 percent of firms were registered.
The number of enterprise firms that have been operating for at least 10 to 12 months despite being registered is 78.3 percent. The statistics also show that such enterprises have started running continuously.
Nepal Living Standard Survey data shows that nearly 6 million people in Nepal are below the poverty line. In this too, due to the low income of the workers, the consumption of Nepalis has not been able to increase as expected. However, compared to the previous survey, it seems that the standard of living of Nepalis has improved a lot.
When the government conducted a similar survey 12 (2066/67) years ago, 25.16 percent of the population was below the poverty line. This year, the annual average consumption of 72 thousand 908 rupees is considered as the basic line. Citizens who consume less than this amount are below the poverty line.
In this year’s survey, a new indicator has been created by extracting separate details of food poverty and non-food poverty. On the same basis, the annual consumption rate has also been found to have increased significantly.
12 years ago, the poverty line was determined based on annual consumption of 19,261 rupees. This year the Aadhaar line has been fixed at 72 thousand 908 rupees. If it was calculated based on the index of 2066/67, today’s poverty would have dropped to 3.57 percent.
This survey has been prepared by collecting data starting from June 2079 and ending in June 2080. 9,600 households were selected to represent the entire country. According to the office, the households were selected so as not to miss the representation of the state and local level.
In the survey, household consumption, income, access to service facilities, housing and residential facility use, education, health, employment, savings and loans, remittances, land ownership and use were collected. According to the office, the standard of living survey is considered the most comprehensive survey. During this period, Nepal experienced the devastating earthquake of 2072 and the covid epidemic. Therefore, the analysis of the office is that the poverty population has not decreased as expected.
