31 May, Kathmandu. America has become the first country to pay a run penalty under the new rule ‘stop clock’ introduced by the ICC.
America, which is also the co-host of the T20 World Cup, had to pay five runs as a penalty in the match against India for not bowling according to the rules.
A match between India and USA was played at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York on Wednesday night under Group ‘A’.
In that match, India was batting in pursuit of the target of 111 runs given by America. Despite not having a big target, India were struggling with the batting.
India needed 35 runs from 30 balls before the start of the 16th over to win. However, after America had to pay 5 penalty runs, India needed only 30 runs in 30 balls. Due to which India was further relieved.
The special stop clock rule was not implemented at once. After ICC used it as a trial, it was officially used for the first time from the ongoing T20 World Cup.
According to this rule, the bowling team will get only 60 seconds for preparation between two overs. After the completion of one over, the next over must be bowled within 60 seconds.
However, there is a rule that if it takes more than 60 seconds to bowl the next over even three times in one innings, a penalty of 5 runs has to be paid. According to that, USA has given 5 run penalty to India.
After each over, the umpire will start a timer on the TV screen attached to the field and if the bowling team does not start the next over after 60 seconds, they will warn the captain of the same team twice. If you slow down three times, you have to pay a fine of five runs.
To reduce the slow over rate, ICC has implemented the ‘stop clock’ rule.
