22 June, Kathmandu. National Sports Council (Rakhep) Member Secretary Tanklal Ghising has congratulated the runner-up Nepali team of the 4th Bangabandhu Cup Men’s International Kabaddi Tournament by welcoming them to Rakhep on Tuesday.
The runner-up team of the tournament, which was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Monday, returned home on Tuesday. This is the biggest achievement achieved by the men’s team in the history of Nepali Kabaddi.
Member-Secretary Tanklal Ghising praised the players and said – ‘It is not enough to praise the performance of the players. Kabaddi is getting one success after another. The women’s kabaddi team created history by winning bronze in the Asian Games. Now you have proved your ability. Whatever was done was done from the heart. So the result was good. It has made the country happy. Sports is such a field, when a team wins, the whole country rejoices and feels proud.’
In the final, Nepal was defeated by the host country Bangladesh 45-31. Bangladesh also won the title in the previous three editions.
12 different countries including Nepal participated in the competition. The participating teams were divided into 2 groups and the game was played on a league less knockout basis. Nepal was in Group ‘A’. In the group stage match, Nepal defeated Malaysia 67-30, Poland 93-41, South Korea 67-45 and Indonesia 63-35. Nepal lost to Bangladesh 46-31 and reached the semi-finals by becoming the runner-up in the group. From the same group, Bangladesh became the winner and reached the semi-finals.
In the semi-final, Nepal defeated Kenya 9-5 on penalties (5 Reds) and secured the title clash with Bangladesh. The game ended in a 50-50 draw at the scheduled time. In the other semi-final, Bangladesh defeated Thailand.
Nepal’s captain Ghanshyam Roka Magar, who performed well in the tournament, was declared the best player of the tournament along with ‘Man of the Match’ in 5 matches. Ghanshyam, who played in the 10th season of the Indian Pro Kabaddi League, was declared ‘Man of the Match’ in all the matches won by Nepal. Ghanshyam received 15,000 Bangladeshi rupees for each ‘man of the match’ and 30,000 Bangladeshi rupees for the best player. In the Indian Pro League, Ghanshyam was signed to Haryana Steelers for INR 1.3 million. Among the Nepalese players in the pro league, he is the highest paid player. Before Ghanshyam, four Nepalese players had played in the pro league.
The General Secretary of All Nepal Kabaddi Association, Arvind Kumar Jha, said that Kabaddi is achieving success due to the support received from the Government of Nepal and the National Sports Council. According to General Secretary Jha, all the four teams that reached the semi-finals, including Nepal, have been selected for the World Cup.
