Kathmandu. Agriculture and Livestock Development Minister Ramnath Adhikari has said that the dairy sector is an important sector of Nepal’s agricultural economy.
In an interaction organized by the National Dairy Development Board and the Central Dairy Cooperative Association in Lalitpur today, the Minister emphasized that both private and government should pay the amount of milk farmers and stressed that the Rs 60 crore given by the government to DDC for the payment of milk should go to the farmers.
Stating that the role of dairy cooperatives is important to make the country self-sufficient in milk production, the minister said that he is aware of the problems faced by dairy farmers and the ministry is working to solve the problem.
The Minister said that the process of commercializing the Dairy Development Institute has already started and he also expressed his commitment to arrange arrangements so that the farmers are also represented in these bodies.
Currently, there are 1,875 dairy cooperatives in 64 districts and the annual turnover of milk is 10 billion rupees, according to the Central Dairy Cooperative Association.
