Myagdi. Landslides have been prevented by using new technology in Baisari Andherikhola on the border of Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2 and 3 of Myagdi, which has created a hazard on Beni-Jomsom-Korla road of Kaligandaki Corridor of national pride connecting China-India.
‘Rock anchoring’ and ‘nailing’ have been done to prevent landslides on Baisari road under the Beni-Jomsom road which connects Mustang with the national highway in the northern area of Myagdi. Sohanjung Karki, sub-engineer of Beni-Jomsom-Korla road plan, informed that by drilling the hill above the road, rods were placed, concrete base was made, walls were constructed, nets were placed to prevent the land from flowing and trees were planted.
“For the prevention of landslides, we have used new technology”, he said, “The rock anchoring and nailing work, which started in the first week of last July, has reached the final stage.” There was a problem of the Andherikhola overflowing the road with stones, geiger falling on the road, burying vehicles, killing and injuring passengers and blocking the road. Last year, one person was killed and a vehicle was buried in a landslide.
Last June, a landslide fell on the moving Ecovan and buried it. Sub-engineer Karki said that a structure was built to stop the landslide by building a wall on the hill that was found after the Kholsa water swept away the landslide.
A 85 to 1.2 meter deep hole has been made in the hillside, and a 77.5 meter long, 1 to 1.5 meter high concrete sloping wall has been constructed in two places. Gaumati Budhamgar, the owner of the construction company Yuvraj Construction, said that after removing the large stones that flow in the path above the wall, soil, nets were laid and plants of khirro, jajivan, babio and grass were planted.
“Drilling has been done in the hill and the rod has been placed through the piles and the slope has been made”, he said. For the prevention of landslides caused by underground water, the landslide that was stopped for a while last year after being swept away by the Kholsa water started to fall again with the onset of this year’s monsoon. Bishnu Chapagai, project engineer, said that in Latokhola, Badarjung and Kavrevir areas of Annapurna Rural Municipality where there is a risk of landslides, the road has been widened using rock anchoring and nailing techniques. The Myagdi section of the Beni-Jomsom road, which was opened by the Nepali Army in 2063, is under upgrading.
