new york A new study shows that most birds injured or knocked unconscious after crashing into buildings in the US do not recover. The study estimates that the number of birds killed by collisions with buildings may exceed one billion.
Collisions with buildings are a major concern for wild birds in the United States.
The Washington Post cited the study report that the study was based only on the death rate and the number of injured birds caused by collisions with buildings.
In a study report published this week in the journal Plos One, researchers took the birds to wildlife rehabilitation centers to assess their long-term survival rates.
It found that between 2016 and 2021, researchers studying incidents in the northeastern United States examined records of more than 3,100 building crashes involving 152 species of birds, and nearly 60 percent of the birds taken to rehabilitation centers died after the crash.
The most common species in the study were: doves, American raccoons, northern cardinals, Cooper’s hawks and gray catbirds.
Amid growing recognition that birds are important carriers of ecosystems, from controlling the overgrowth of insects to helping disperse seeds, many US cities and states have passed regulations requiring new buildings to be more bird-friendly. RUSSIAN/Xinhua
