32 May, Kathmandu. Residents of Madhesh also demonstrated on Friday with empty pots on the middle road of Baneshwar asking for water in Terai-Madhesh.
They protested from Maitighar to Baneshwar demanding protection of chure and solving the problem of water shortage in Madhesh. Police stopped them near Baneshwar Chowk.
After the police did not allow them to go towards the parliament building, the protestors sat on the streets of New Baneshwar and chanted slogans. They are chanting slogans such as “Open your eyes government, don’t sell bracelets, implement the bracelet law, give water to the government”.
Residents of different districts of Madhesh who came to Kathmandu on foot about 1 month ago to inform the government about the water problem of Madhesh and to put pressure on solving the problem, were sitting on a dharna at Maitighar for 22 days.
Chure conservation activist Sunil Kumar Yadav says that despite the government spending crores of rupees every year in the name of chure conservation, 80 percent of chapakal has dried up in Madhesh due to the destruction of chure. He has expressed his anger that the parties ignored the protest when they raised the demand for the protection of their stolen property.
