Farmers of Chitwan being displaced from sericulture

[ad_1]

31st June, Chitwan. Lately, as the farmers of the district have been attracted towards vegetable farming, silk farming has been displaced. Until a few years ago, sericulture was used commercially in Madi area of the district, but now the farmers here have been displaced from this profession.

According to Purnima Chhetri, head of the office of Kimbu Nursery Development Center Bhandara Chitwan, earlier cooperatives and organizations were registered in the Madi region for sericulture, but now farmers are fleeing from this profession and are attracted to vegetable crops. He said, ‘Farmers have changed professions because silk farming takes a long time and management becomes more difficult.’

Chhetri said that the center has now stopped producing koya commercially. He said that Koya should be produced and given to the private sector, and when there is a market problem, commercial production should be stopped. He informed that initially there was a lot of production of sericulture in Makwanpur and Chitwan, but now the production is decreasing.

Due to the lack of marketing of the silk yarn produced in Nepal, the businessmen have fled, said the prominent Chhetri. He said, ‘Silk thread is imported from outside. The thread here is not identified. Due to lack of market, the profession is in crisis.’ He says that when there is a problem in market management, they have to wait for a long time and even if the product is good, it deteriorates, so the farmers’ attraction towards it has decreased.

Chhetri informed that the farmers engaged in sericulture in the district are now attracted to cash crops that provide quick income. He said, ‘now even 20 percent of the kimbu plants produced in the center are hardly used for sericulture.’ According to him, the center has produced five lakh plants this year.

Now that the summer has increased, the center is planning to sell up to 4 lakhs, said the chief Chhetri. According to him, kimbu nursery is being produced in an area of about six hectares. He said that the kimbu plants produced here go to Sindhuli, Gorkha, Kathmandu and other districts.
