31 May, Kathmandu. President Ramchandra Paudel has said that climate justice cannot be forgotten when discussing social justice. Speaking as a keynote speaker at the opening session of the Global Alliance for Social Justice, President Poudel raised the issue of climate justice on Thursday under the 112th International Labor Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
“The world community, especially past and present big emitters, should not deviate from this responsibility, when we are talking about social justice, we cannot forget the climate justice that should be established at the global level”, said President Paudel.
He said that climate justice should be ensured immediately by providing adequate funds and necessary technology to countries that are at risk of the negative effects of climate change.
President Paudel said that Nepal is suffering from the worst effects of climate change despite making a negligible contribution to carbon emissions and Nepal has no fault in this.
“In recent years, our Himalayas, including the world’s highest peak, Everest, are losing their snow and turning into black mountains, and glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate and speed,” President Paudel said, “Climate change has seriously affected clean water, crops, biodiversity and health of millions of our people. It has pushed to extreme poverty and inequality.’
President Paudel has appealed to everyone for the development of a culture that respects labor. “It is the common responsibility of everyone to ensure that a fair share of the return of labor reaches the hands of the workers, this is social justice,” he said.
President Paudel opined that the collective effort to achieve sustainable peace through social justice is equally relevant today.
President Paudel said that today’s labor market is changing rapidly and it demands new skills, new technology and creative work style.
“Whether it is industrial products or service sector or banking services based on information technology, why not machine learning and artificial intelligence, there have been extensive changes in all sectors, therefore, more receptivity and new work style are necessary to face the change in the nature of work”, he said.
President Paudel also said that the world has embraced new challenges such as electronic and telecommunication economy and we are committed to implement the decent labor agenda in all these areas.
“Unfortunately, huge amounts of money that should be spent on development have been invested in deadly weapons for useless fighting, the international community must reverse this path and mobilize resources for the prosperity of humanity as a whole,” he said.
