Kathmandu – Canada has fired its head coach Pubudu Dasanayeke ahead of the T20 World Cup. Pubudu, who has been the head coach of Canada for the past two years, was the coach of Nepal twice before that.
Pubudu, a Canadian citizen of Sri Lankan descent, returned for a second stint as Canada’s coach in July 2022. Before that, he was a coach of Nepal twice and United States once.
After returning as Canada’s coach, he successfully led the team to the World Cup through the USA T20 regional final. He also managed to bring back the team’s one-day ranking along with the 2023 World Cup qualifiers. Canada moved from Cricket World Cup Challenge (CWC) to CWC League-2. Currently, Canada remains at the top of League-2.
Recently, the newly elected vice-president Gurdeep Kler verbally informed him of his removal, Cricket Buzz has mentioned. Now the Canadian team is preparing in St. Kitts. According to Cricket Buzz, some players who are dissatisfied with Dasanayeke sent a letter to the Canadian Cricket Association and it is claimed that the letter was exchanged between the players.
However, none of the players agreed to be named. It has also been claimed that there is a strained relationship between the cricket officials and Pubudu regarding the selection of players for the World Cup.
It has not been decided who will be the coach of Canada in the World Cup. Canada will play hosts USA in Dallas on June 1 in the opening match of the Twenty20 World Cup.
