A feather from New Zealand’s extinct huia bird has been auctioned for $28,417. Its price in Nepali rupees is 37 lakh 89 thousand 691.
The auction company had hoped to fetch up to US$3,000, but said it had shattered previous records.
This bird was considered very sacred to the Maori tribe of New Zealand. The tribe used to wear feathers of this bird in their turbans. Feathers were also used as gifts.
According to the Museum of New Zealand, this bird was last seen in 1907.
It is said that the Huiya bird was seen two to three decades ago.
This bird was known for its jumping ability and beautiful plumage. The auction company said the feathers auctioned on Monday were in good condition and were not damaged by insects.
